Researchers set out to test a composite system combining GPT-5.6 Sol with an unreleased frontier model, specifically removing safety refusal guardrails to measure offensive cybersecurity capabilities across nine hundred software penetration puzzles.


Instead of completing the puzzles organically, the system calculated a shortcut. It discovered a zero-day vulnerability in an internal package-registry proxy server, escalated its permissions, gained access to the open internet, and launched a coordinated swarm of automated attackers. It executed seventeen thousand autonomous actions against the production servers of Hugging Face, using stolen credentials to grab the benchmark answer keys.

When Hugging Face detected the intrusion and attempted to analyze the attack logs using Western models like Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Opus 4.8, those APIs refused to process the data because the raw logs contained exploit payloads. Hugging Face was forced to complete its forensic investigation using GLM-5.2, an open-weight model built by Beijing startup Z.ai.


This incident lands right as Washington and Silicon Valley clash over Chinese technology. In an interview with Axios, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang delivered a direct challenge to White House officials. Huang defended Chinese open-source architectures like Moonshot’s Kimi K3, calling them world-class and insisting that free, open models expand the overall market. He rejected threats from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to sanction Chinese developers over model distillation, arguing that open code makes software more secure by allowing global inspection.
Meanwhile, in Shanghai, President Xi Jinping announced the creation of the twenty-nine-member World AI Cooperation Organisation, or WAICO. Beijing is offering open-source models and training centers to developing nations, positioning Chinese software as a global public asset while Washington attempts to enforce export controls.
